Editor’s choice: North Snood by We Are Knitters
Gusty winds have sent Merion in search of a new cowl to wear – and it has to be bigger and better than the ones she’s already knitted!
I fall in and out of love with yarn weights – I’ll go through phases of being madly in love with 4ply and DK yarn, and then be utterly passionate about aran weight plumpness, but there are times when only chunky and super chunky yarn will do. Sometimes you just need the thrill of a project growing so fast before your eyes, that the finishing line is in sight before you’ve barely begun!
We Are Knitters The Wool is deliciously, fatly super chunky, deeply satisfyingly so…
Chunky and super chunky weight yarn (bulky and super bulky in the US) is not only good for quick projects, but its brilliant for children too. We’ve always assumed that using 4mm needles and DK yarn is best for teaching children to knit, but I personally find that giving children nice big yarn and chunky needles makes learning to knit far easier. The stitches are more obvious and easier to fix when dropped.
So – I needed a cowl. It’s very windy here in the UK at the moment, and I’m never keen to have something wound tightly around my neck, so I fancied something in super chunky yarn with big stitches traps the warmth without strangulation occurring. I love the North Snood from We Are Knitters, and We Are Knitters The Wool is deliciously, fatly super chunky – deeply satisfyingly so.
The North Snood is fun and easy to make – simple knit and purl stitches form basket stitch, and the pattern is FREE to download. You’ll need some 10mm needles – I love these Addi Single Point Gold Glitter Needles, but if you prefer wooden, We Are Knitters Single Point Needles are absolutely gorgeous. You’ll need just ONE ball of We Are Knitters The Wool – and here comes the tricky bit – trying to decide which shade to use! There are 18 colours to choose from, but I love these:
From left to right: a rich rasperry Pink, cool frozen Aquamarine and deliciously violet Mauve.
If you’re wondering how it looks on, here is our lovely Jenni modelling it! Doesn’t she look great? This fantastic cowl looks brilliant on everyone, and is the most wonderful quick knit for Christmas gifts. I’m going to make myself one in Aquamarine – which colour will you choose?
