Snowflakes for Home-Start – FREE PATTERNS!

Home-Start’s Snowflake Appeal supports young children and families in need.   You can help by making snowflake gifts to raise money for this brilliant charity whose work helps hundreds of families every year!

“Children and families are like snowflakes – unique and fragile.  The appeal is a brilliant metaphor for the way Home-Start helps people. This is an amazing organisation – on the ground, helping people.  If you want to help anyone in the UK, Home-Start is the best way to do it.”  Kirstie Allsopp

Many young children are surrounded by hardship or tragedy: from bereavement to isolation or disability; from financial hardship and food shortages to terrible housing. In a quarter of families in the UK, children are facing many of these challenges at once. These children, as unique and fragile as snowflakes, are who the Snowflake Appeal helps support.

Home-Start’s volunteers offer emotional and practical support crafted for the circumstances of each child; helping parents cope with illness or disability, assist with routine, reduce chaos, organise finances and access emergency support, find local support groups, encourage the development and learning of their children, and so much more.

You can make a difference by raising money in lots of different ways!  Host a coffee morning, a cake sale, a table at a school fair – AND – knit or crochet something fantastic with a snowflake motif to sell to raise money for this brilliant charity.  To help you, we have two gorgeous FREE snowflake patterns for you to download!

We love this snuggly Snowflake Hat from Rowan – knitted here in super chunky Rowan Big Wool – a quick knit that will keep everyone warm this winter!

This cute crocheted Snowflake Ornament is crocheted in Red Heart Niki, in shade 2034, White.  These will fly off your craft table – and why not crochet a few extra for your tree too!

Crocheted snowflakes!

We love Gracious Rain’s snowflake hot pad – a fabulous idea for Christmas cookery!  This is a brilliant granny square design with a snowflake inside it, so you can crochet these together back to back to make this pad, or even crochet several and stitch together for a gorgeous winter blanket!  Cotton is the best yarn to use for a kitchen pad or dishcloth,  Debbie Bliss Cotton DK comes in some fantastic shades, or try Rico Essentials Cotton DK, another gorgeous cotton yarn.   If you want to make chunkier snowflakes, why not try crocheting these snowflake squares with an aran weight yarn, or even chunky weight for a blanket?  Drops Paris is an aran weight cotton yarn, or for a soft squishy blanket, try Bergere de France Galaxie, with a twinkly metallic shimmer on an 8mm hook!
