5 free baby toy patterns!
Babies love toys! We’ve found you five fabulous FREE patterns for you to make for the little ones in your life!
Baby toys are great fun to knit – so much love and joy can be poured into little toys for a baby to play with! To begin with, for the first month or so, a newborn baby is only able to focus on objects 20-30 cm away from its eyes, so try to use bright colours and fun features for baby to see! Nature’s “grabbing” instinct is with babies from birth, so tails, ears, arms and legs are perfect for little fingers to practise their grabbing techniques!
Make sure that you remember to make all baby toys safe: use safety eyes and noses and yarns that are baby friendly too, nothing with too much of a halo (babies will naturally put things in their mouths), and be careful with fashion yarns with bobbles that might break off.
1. Basket Bunnies by Sara Elizabeth Kellner
Look at these gorgeous bunnies with their little baskets on their backs! Their long ears are perfect for grabbing and you can embroider a fun face too!
2. Little Lion Brand Sock Critter – Lion
Lion Brand‘s Sock Critter patterns are great fun – there are puppies, kittens, sheep, bears and bunnies – and this gorgeous lion, all knitted in Lion Brand Wool Ease, an aran weight wool/acrylic blend that is washable and knits up fast!
3. Fuzzy Lamb by Barbara Prime
Hasn’t this lamb got the sweetest face? And little ears, arms and legs to hang on to! Make this beautiful little lamb in your favourite worsted or aran weight yarn – the designer suggests a cotton or something with a fluffier texture (although be careful not to use too much fluff for younger babies) – or a good washable acrylic like Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran.
4. Pax the Alpaca by Amanda Berry
We love Pax the Alpaca! He’s got just the right amount of hair to twiddle and ears to pull for a little one – and he can snuggle up and be friends for babies right through to school age! He’s got a splendid smart blue scarf, but you can make him all sorts of accessories to take with him on trips in the buggy!
5. Noah’s Ark Giraffes by Sirdar
For those of you adventurous knitters, here’s a fun pattern with some colourwork! These giraffes are perfect best friends for a little one, with plenty of dangly arms and legs to grab and chew! Knitted in Sirdar Cotton DK, you’ll be able to pop them in the washing machine and keep them beautifully clean too!
