A year ago, Sian and Claire from our fabulous Smiles team were sitting on the BBC sofa at Wimbledon, knitting against the clock. What were they knitting? Scottish tennis hero Andy Murray! Tennis lovers all over the world love the Wimbledon tennis championships, and when rain stops play, what better activity is there, than knitting until the games begin?

This fabulous pattern for Andy Murray comes from Knit your own Scotland, a book stuffed full of hilarious patterns for Scottie dogs, bagpipes, Robbie Burns, Braveheart William Wallace and Nessie the Loch Ness monster herself. The pattern for Andy Murray is a FREE download (click on the image above) and a great stashbuster!

Strawberries, strawberries, strawberries!

Wimbledon is famous for its quintessential English menu including the summertime favourite, strawberries and cream. There’s nothing more perfect to eat whilst watching a tennis match — but if you’re not eating strawberries, why not try knitting them? We love Amanda Berry’s free strawberry pattern, pictured below — why not make some as key fobs, or beautiful additions to your fruit bowl?

Game, set, match!

For Wimbledon watching, we recommend some plain knitting, and working a pair of socks in the round is deliciously relaxing and feels rather gentle. A tense tennis match is not the time for lace patterns with long repeats, or colourwork that requires you to juggle four colours at a time. With this in mind, these Vivace Socks by Elizabeth Sullivan have been designed for use with self striping yarn, so you won’t even need to change colour!

We have some beautiful self striping yarns, such as Debbie Bliss Rialto Luxury Sock which comes in 11 stunning shades, with a long colour repeat. Opal sock yarns are spun with self patterning technology and there are many exciting colourways to choose from, and sock afficionados are very partial to West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply which comes in self striping and solid shades.

You’ll need double pointed needles or a circular needle, whichever you prefer, and a big bowl of strawberries and cream!
