Brand Profile: Blue Sky Alpacas

Blue Sky Alpacas pride themselves on producing high quality, durable and eco-friendly products. With yarns featuring a beautiful colour palette and luxuriously soft feel, plus a great range of unique pattern designs, LoveKnitting is proud to welcome them to our ever expanding stash. Read on to find out how it all began…

It all started with a television documentary about alpacas, which Linda Niemeyer, the founder of Blue Sky Alpacas, was fascinated by. Within two years she had quit her career as a graphic designer and bred her own herd of alpacas on a Minnesota farm in order to produce yarn to make and sell luxury hand-knit sweaters to upscale boutiques. Despite huge success, Linda decided that she wanted to focus on only one part of the business, the part that she loved most – designing yarns and patterns.Brand Profile: Blue Sky Alpacas - LoveKnitting blogIt was from this that Blue Sky Alpacas was born! Linda’s lovely alpacas became pets (including Ollie, pictured above) and she began to source natural fibres from across the globe in countries, such as, Peru and Bolivia. During this time luxury, natural fibre yarns were rare on the market and therefore her niche product stood out against the rest when the wool industry experienced its big boom shortly after its founding.

Blue Sky Alpacas holds environmental preservation close to its heart, priding itself on sourcing products from sustainable resources and being respectful to the earth and community. Linda explained, “We really believe in social responsibility at every level, having a great product, isn’t enough; you need to have integrity behind it.” Social responsibility is also important to them, with sales of its needles contributing to an educational trust fund for the Vietnamese village in which they are made at a family-run factory. The organic cottons, handspun by a a group of Peruvian women, also help to sustain a centuries-old tradition of eco-friendly cotton cultivation within the region.

Blue Sky Alpacas Favourites

Brand Profile: Blue Sky Alpacas - LoveKnitting blogFrom left to right: Worsted Cotton, Alpaca Silk, Metalico

Blue Sky Alpacas is probably most loved for Worsted Cotton, a heavy worsted (aran) weight 100% organic cotton that comes in a huge variety of exclusive shades that are uniquely hand picked by the Blue Sky Alpacas team. It is perfect for baby knits, light cardigans and crochet projects!

Another favourite is Metalico, a beautifully shimmering yarn with a colour pallete all thanks to the natural fibres themselves and a clever blend of baby alpaca and mulberry silk. We think it’s ideal for an evening shawl knitted in the beautiful shade Gold Dust! Find a great pattern here.

We can’t talk about Blue Sky Alpacas yarns without mentioning Alpaca Silk! A luxurious blend of alpaca and silk, this yarn gives your lace weight knits a glorious sheen and elegant drape. But be sure to hand wash gently! This yarn is featured in some of their vintage style patterns, which we absolutely love! They can be found in the images and links below. Great article. This is one of my favorite yarn companies. Any baby blanket I make is with the organic cotton. Would love to have an alpaca as a pet. So sweet. I love your site.

      Hi Virginia,

Thank you for your lovely comment! We’d love an alpaca as a pet too, but not sure he’d fit in our office!

      All the best,
      Faith & the LoveKnitting team
