FREE shamrock baby cardigan knitting pattern for St. Patrick’s Day

Whether you have children or not, this is a fabulous project for the little ones in your life in the lead up to St Paddy’s Day!

This shamrock cardigan is sized for babies who wear 3 -6 month and 6 -9 month clothing. It’s knit flat on long single pointed needles or circular needles. The sleeves are created with raglan increases, with the sleeve stitches being held on a stitch holder and then picked up after the body is finished.

The colorwork is created using the intarsia technique, which is better suited to knitting things flat – plus, the color chart is only 32 stitches wide so it’s much easier than fair isle in this case.

Materials:

I chose Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino yarn for this project because it’s soft enough for baby skin and machine washable. Those two attributes make it my go-to baby yarn, and with the wide color range I’m never lacking inspiration.

You will need 2 balls of Apple, and 1 ball of Jade for both sizes.

You will also need a 4 mm (US 6) circular needle: I used my trusty KnitPro Symfonie circular needle.

For the sleeves, you can use the same circular needle if you use the magic loop method; otherwise you will need a set of 4 mm (US 6) DPNs.

4 stitch markers

1 yarn needle

4 – 6 buttons

2 stitch holders

This pattern includes a glossary of terms and row by row instructions so even if you’ve never made a seamless cardigan from the top down, you’ll be able to make this one!

The raglan increases have a clean, crisp look, and are so easy to knit. For those of us who hate to sew pieces together (raise your hands!), seamless knitting is the way to go! There are contact details in the pattern in case you have any trouble, I’m always happy to help a fellow knitter.

For the Spring/Summer it would be fun if Knit by Bit featured a lace table runner, in an easy botanical lace pattern, repeated a few times.

It would love it if you had a Shamrock pompom tutorial for next St-Paddy’s Day. If you feature it early next March, we’ll have time to make lots of pompoms, decorate ourselves with them and hit the parade in style! They’d even make cool gifts for friends and family.
