Cast on with your tunes on – A Thanksgiving playlist

Thanksgiving might not have quite the musical canon that Christmas does, but there are plenty of songs out there that embrace the spirit of giving thanks. Here are some great songs to knit to while you wait for that amazing turkey feast.

Elton John

“Thank You Mama” by Elton John

Who is more important to give thanks to than mama? This under-appreciated gem is a demo from Sir Elton’s second album that was only released in 2008. It’s just the man and his piano. Simple beauty, and a great message to start off our list of thankfulness.

“Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” by Sly and the Family Stone

After thanking mom, why not celebrate yourself with this upbeat funky tune from Sly and the Family Stone? This is sure to loosen you up and get your feet a-tappin’!

“Thank You” by Dido

This is one of those songs that is nearly impossible to get out of your head. The message is a powerful one: no matter how bad things might be, the singer’s better half reminds her that everything is going to be OK.

“Thanksgiving Theme” by Vince Guaraldi Trio

This short-but-sweet jazz tune is the final song on the soundtrack to “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” It’s an instrumental number, so take this as an interlude to think of what you’re thankful for as you listen to the masterful piano skills of Mr. Guaraldi.

“Alice’s Restaurant Massacre” by Arlo Guthrie

Now it all started two Thanksgivings ago… These words start off this epic story-song that clocks in at almost 19 minutes long. Because of this, it has become a tradition for classic rock radio stations all over America to play Alice’s Restaurant on Thanksgiving. You just might even find yourself knitting in perfect rhythm to Arlo’s repetitive guitar melody.

“What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong

It’s time to slow it down a bit with this absolute classic of a song sung by gravel-voiced Louis Armstrong. Even in today’s troubled times, it’s important to think of all of the wonderful things we’re surrounded by and give thanks.

“Mashed Potatoes U.S.A.” by James Brown

Time to get a little funky and dream of that ever-present side, mashed potatoes. Now I’m getting hungry…

“Home Again” by Carole King

Oh, Carole King. Her music always makes me smile. Thanksgiving is all about being at home, and being surrounded by friends and family. Listening to this song makes me yearn to be home eating my mom’s home cooking.

Well I hope these songs have gotten you inspired and feeling thankful. I know a good playlist always puts me in a good mood! These songs are just the beginning, you can hear them and the rest of my playlist below. Happy knitting!
