Autumn Winter Trends: Top Yarn Shades of the Season

It’s time to cure those end-of-summer blues! Feast your eyes on the rich hues the new season has to offer with inspiration from the catwalks and beyond. Enjoy this selection of projects and yarns that follow our key trends; Shades of the 70s and Jewel Tones for womenswear, Kids Brights for childrenswear and Grey Hues for home….

Autumn Winter Trends: Top Yarn Shades of the Season - Seventies yarn shades

As you may have read in our Autumn-Winter Womenswear Trend Report, you’ll know that the seventies has made a revival, and with that comes a whole load of brown, orange, neutral and yellow hues. Be on trend with these yarn picks…

1. Adriafil Soffio Plus in Aviation Blue

A rare find! Adriafil Soffio Plus is a mohair/wool/acrylic blend in a worsted/aran weight. Knitting on 4.5-5mm needles, this will make up into stunning garments and super soft, warm accessories!

2. BC Garn Loch Lomond Washed in LL13

Stunning Scottish yarn, BC Garn Loch Lomond Washed is a gentle tweed that is soft and easy to knit. Gorgeous jewel shades mingle with earthy tones that reflect the stunning Scottish Highlands landscape. Knits on 4-5mm needles, perfect for any DK or light worsted weight pattern. This yarn is a gorgeous choice for toasty cardigans, warm jumpers and accessories.

3. GGH Suri Alpaka in Safran

GGH Suri Alpaka is an elegant yarn made from 100% Suri alpaca – a rare breed of alpaca that produces a wool with a beautiful, silky sheen. Brushed for extra volume, this sport weight yarn is so light that you’ll only need 150-200g to make a super-light sweater. Choose from a pallette of gorgeous, rich and delicate shades.

4. Lang Cashmere Premium in 0159

An absolute treat – Lang Yarns Cashmere Premium is not only exquisitely soft and spun with the finest cashmere, but the colour palette is a mixture of undyed natural tones and “colours of nature” shades created by using natural dyes from weld, cochineal, logwood, rhubarb and walnut. Knits up on 3.5-4.5mm needles, perfect for most DK weight patterns.

5. West Yorkshire Spinners Bluefaced Leicester in Ecru

A favourite in the Smiles team, West Yorkshire Spinners Bluefaced Leicester Roving Yarn knits up on 4mm needles (aran weight) and is perfect for felted accessories like gorgeous bags and hats!

6. Rowan Big Wool Silk in Book

We’re very excited about Rowan Big Wool Silk, the 70% wool/30% silk blend, super chunky yarn, destined to deliver superb definition and texture to all those stunning super chunky knits! If you love Big Wool, then this will add an extra dimension to your super chunky knitting – think cabled cardies, jumpers, scarves and cowls with the addition of delicious silk!

Autumn Winter Trends: Top Yarn Shades of the Season - Jewel Tone yarn shades

Jewel tones also made a heavy appearance on the runways of the world, which we couldn’t be happier about! We had so much fun picking these gorgeous shades, we think you’ll love them too!

1. Araucania Maipo in PT1956

This deliciously jewel toned yarn is hand-dyed in Chile by expert dyers who pass the tradition down through the generations. The chainette construction of the yarn means that it’s soft and light, as well as being durable and versatile. It’s 100% wool, and we think it would make a stunning cover up for this fall.

2. Fyberspates Gleem Lace in 700

This yarn is a stunning favorite at LoveKnitting HQ – with a blend of silk and British Blue Faced Leicester wool, this yarn is unbelievably smooth. The shades in this line are to die for, and this lush mauve is no exception.

3. Rico Baby So Soft DK in Fir Green

Little ones deserve to wear beautiful colors, too! This deliciously deep green yarn is perfect for baby knits – it’s machine washable and super soft. Does the little one in your life need a hunter green cardigan this year?

4. Rowan Big Wool Silk in Verse

It’s super chunky, it’s a blend of wool and silk, and it’s a delicious shade of perdot green. August birthday babies rejoice – finally, a yarn that matches our gemstone and does it justice.

5. Malabrigo Worsted in Forest

We all love a bit of Malabrigo – their stunningly dyed yarns make even the coldest heart melt. We are in love with this emerald shade!

Autumn Winter Trends: Top Yarn Shades of the Season - Bright yarn shades

Our Autumn Winter Trends Report for Childrenswear was all about playful patterns full of fun designs. Eco fibres are what it’s all about this season as well as vibrant bright shades. Take a look at some of these picks perfect for knitting childrenswear.

1. BC Garn Semilla Fino in OX112

BC Garn Semilla Fino is a stunning 4ply yarn that is made from 100% organic wool. Semilla Fino knits on 3-3.5mm needles and would make beautiful garments, accessories – and thanks to the beautiful color palette, would be fabulous for fair isle and stranded colorwork. We love this rich green shade in particular!
