Pantone Color of the Year: Ultra Violet Yarns!

Provocative, thoughtful and dramatic, Ultra Violet is next year’s Pantone Color of the year, and we love it!

“We’re living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination …” and I can’t believe that already before we’ve even touched the first day of 2018, we’ve had news of a new star system which fits very nicely indeed with Pantone’s Ultra Violet feel – enigmatic, exciting, energizing and inspiring connection.

Purples ARE enigmatic. They’re magical aren’t they? There is huge depth to this blue-based purple, a rich, mystical feel that takes us beyond realms. We knitters have always known the power of purple – when we need to be lifted, when we need to be nostalgic, when we need to be transported – there is a purple for every need! The purple halo of a blueberry, the promise of purply planets, and even the vintage inspired magical lilac has a presence like no other color – and it takes courage to wear these purples, too!

So how can we translate this glorious berry blue purple into our knitting? Let’s have a look at some of the ultra violet yarns we love:

Malabrigo Chunky in Purple Mystery

Quite aside from the luscious softness and loft of Malabrigo Chunky, this heady violet is semi solid and full of tonal happiness! All your favourite chunky weight patterns will be super soft and delicious in this 100% merino wool yarn.

Cascade Ultra Pima in Regal

Cascade Ultra Pima is the most glorious mercerised cotton in a DK weight – it’s beautifully soft, deliciously cool and has the most fabulous sheen – little wonder, therefore, that this right royal shade, Regal, looks stunning!

King Cole Glitz DK

KC Glitz DK

Add a strand of sparkle to this enigmatic shade for accessories that sing out mystery and magic! If you love ultra violet with a flash of glitter, this is the DK yarn for you!

Paintbox Yarns Simply DK – Pansy Purple

Gloriously violet, but not too deep, Pansy Purple is one of three purples (plus two lilacs) that are included in the Paintbox Yarns palette! These super soft acrylics come in DK, aran and chunky weights too.

Debbie Bliss Rialto Chunky in Ultramarine

Rialto Chunky

Debbie Bliss color palettes always include gorgeous rich purples and violets – and Rialto Chunky is no exception here, with Ultramarine.  This deliciously soft merino chunky yarn is perfect for cosy hats, scarves and statement garments!

BC Garn Jaipur Silk Fino

BC Garn Jaipur Silk

Deliciously soft, with a stunning sheen, BC Garn Jaipur Silk in H26 is a real reflection of ultra violet in silk. Its lustrous finish beams out the most royal purple hue – this lace weight luxury yarn is a must for shawls!

What will you be knitting in ultra violet this year?

I’m on it! Making a lovely Great Oak shawl in wonderful Border Mill alpaca tweed silk atm – should be finished tmr, but can’t attach a photo to show you 😐

  2. Liz C says:

I’m knitting a basic jumper in Debbie Bliss Fine Donegal “Cosmos” – definitely Ultra Violet with Donegal tweed flecks of yellow, pink, blue, and green. It really does look like a thousand and one stars in a purple sky. I wanted 8ply but only 4 ply was available so I’m knitting double yarn. Love the texture and ‘feel’ as I knit and the result is even better. 🙂

Wonderful! My favourite colour is “in” this year – the perfect excuse to make myself a treat or two/use some of the gorgeous purple yarns in my stash/buy a few more…

I’ve been knitting and wearing various shades of purple for years. Glad that everybody has just caught up with me. Finished the Nora Gaughan cardigan in the Spring issue of Vogue – purple. Almost finished a Rowan cardigan with a basketweave border – purple. Purple rules!!!

  6. Susan McRae says:

sorry can’t touch it. My mother in law lived in purple and mauve and it spoiled the colours for me.Lion brand wool has a list of colours of 2018 which I love in autumn tones.

  7. Mel says:

    My school uniform was purple……..!

I would like to knit a lacy cardigan for spring, and this Cascade Ultra Pima is calling me. I haven’t chosen the pattern yet, although I keep thinking of the gorgeous Norah Gaughan cardigan in issue 3 of the Making Magazine.
