What do you buy a knitter for Christmas?

In a world full of heady treats, what DO you buy a knitter for Christmas? Merion knows….

Knit like a Latvian kit

Knit Like a Latvian kit – a perfect gift for experienced knitters!

It’s not difficult to buy gifts for knitters. If you opened your arms into the yarny world and said “what would you like?” most knitters would swoon momentarily, and then run towards the needles/yarns/books/accessories with gusto!

Know your knitter!

What kind of knitter are you buying for? Do they love natural fibres or acrylics? Do they knit lace, or do they love funky modern super chunky yarn? What colours do they love? Here are a few categories that might help you with gift inspiration.

Sock knitters

You can’t go wrong with some delicious Coop Knits Socks Yeah! In delicious shades, this bouncy merino has a dash of nylon to keep socks in shape. While you’re at it, one of Rachel Coopey’s fabulous books would be wonderful – and perhaps some double pointed needles?

Sock knitter gifts!

We have some beautiful sock yarns whether you love variegated or plain, and a wonderful selection of downloadable sock patterns. Why not print one off, and wrap up with two balls of yarn?

Shawl knitters

Shawl knitters LOVE beautiful yarn! Shawls are often worked in 4ply or laceweight yarn, and there are some delicious yarns to partner up with beautiful shawl patterns. Choose a pattern like this gorgeous Country Song Shawl by Gabrielle Vezina, and some yarn to match – I’ve picked this super soft kettle dyed Manos del Uruguay Alegria which comes in 24 stunning shades!

Toy knitters

Knitters who love making toys are very easy to please. We have some wonderful patterns for toys – I’ve picked three out of thousands to show you here! Girl Cat by Julie Williams is one of a range of animals complete with outfits that are nothing short of genius, and a delight to knit. Daniel the Spaniel by Penny Connor is one of a range of pets you will love and want to keep for ever! Holly Berry and her tiny teddy is the fabulous work of Dollytime, whose range of dolly patterns will keep you making friends for years to come.  The best thing you can buy a toy knitter, is a range of fantastic acrylic yarn in a rainbow of colours – and what better than Paintbox Yarns Simply DK? 60 shades of fabulous yarn at an incredibly affordable price.

Needle collectors

Some knitters are so protective of their needles they will never let anyone else ever use them! They are as personal as a favourite cardigan, and knitters know what they love – but they are often keen to try something new. I’ve recently come to love the Addi Olivewood Circular needles, and any knitter would love a set of new needles to try.

The KnitPro Interchangeable Dreamz needle set contains the most popular sizes of needles (3.5mm, 4mm, 4.5mm, 5mm & 6mm) in a case with interchangeable cords and locks – a great first set of circular needles.  For knitters who prefer single point needle for knitting flat, the KnitPro Nova Cubics Single Point set is a gift of great beauty! These brass cubic needles will fly through even the stickiest of yarns.

Bookish knitters

Most knitters will swoon over a book, and it’s a little bit like having lots of cookery books – you might not necessarily make all the recipes, but they inspire you and show you new things. We have a wonderful range of knitting books for you to browse, but I thought I’d pick out a few of my favourites for you!

Quintessential DK by West Yorkshire Spinners is a fabulous collection of adaptable patterns, and by that I mean it is full of patterns that you can interchange – different sleeves, different decorative panels, different necklines – it’s a very useful pattern book. You can even read a review here!

All of the Rowan books are works of art, and will be treasured forever, and for fervent fair isle knitters, Kate Davies’ Colours of Shetland is a must, full of inspirational photography, original patterns and nuggets of Shetland history along the way.

Thoroughly modern knitters

If your knitter is new to knitting, or loves fabulous modern patterns, there are some gorgeous gift ideas from the super stylish colour block patterns from MillaMia, with yarn to match, to some serious super chunky fun with deliciously plump yarn and thousands of patterns to go with it. Some Loopy Mango gigantic needles are great fun for extreme knitting, and let’s not forget some arm knitting fun too!
